BYDL - Untitled VI And V [Self release - 2023]BYDL is a Vienna-based noise project- which has seemingly been active since the turn of the 2020’s. Untitled VI And V is it’s first venture into wall noise- with the two tracks here we have a very primal/ organic nature-based ANW- which rather brought to mind a less simplistic take on the type of thing Lungwash dis in the early to mid-2010s. The release is a self-release- which is now just digital- though the project sold a single copy of the release on a recycled cassette. The digital cover is a hazed grey, white and black affair- showing something grainy half-light- possibly a bent and pale human back. So this adds a rewarding sense of eerie mystery to the release.
So first out of gates is “Untitled VI”- this runs at thirty-one minutes & fifty-three seconds. The ‘wall’ features a muffled ‘n’ murky rattling judder- which rather sounded like some form of underwater rushing recordings. Around this, we find this a loser & smaller static grain jittering- which at points sound like they are becoming more manic/ rapid- but I think, this to be a trick of the ‘wall’.
The other track here is "Untitled V". It comes in at the twenty-seven minutes & forty-nine-second mark. The track brings together a deep subterranean bass roll ‘n’ billow, with a tight jittering static grain- and way off in the distance I can just make out a looped wavering ‘n’ lonesome high-pitch tone glow. This track keeps feeling like it might suddenly stop or fade back more- but this never occurs, and we get a great general feeling of natural based dread & unease.
It is always great to see new people stepping into making walled noise- and let's hope Untitled VI And V isn’t just a one-off go at the form, as really this is worth opening shot from BYDL. Drop by here to hear it for yourself Roger Batty
