Eric Copeland - Spiral Stairs [les albums claus - 2022]NYC experimental musician Eric Copeland brings an interesting, eclectic, electronic groove record with Spiral Stairs. An engaging mix of off-kilter pop and electronica, this LP will get heads nodding, even if they're being scratched at the same time. A sonic departure from Copeland's other project, Black Dice, the seven songs on display here will certainly bring a smile to the listener's face. Like waking up in a 90's daydream, "Restart the Body" opens up Spiral Stairs quickly and with a purpose: restarting your body, of course! Laden with fun synths and groove hooks, the opener wastes no time letting the listener know what they're in for with this album. Smiles and fun abound, and Copeland spreads the joy with aplomb. The upbeat beats continue this way for the rest of the record, although sometimes changing form slightly. For example, "Call Me Jose" has a minimal dance weirdness that is reminiscent of Thomas Leer, and "IOU" strips even more of the backing electronics for some avant-dance weirdness. However, the compulsion to get the listener grooving can't be held back for too long, and the album returns to its full on electronic smilefest shortly after. Ending with the nearly ten-minute title track, Spiral Stairs leaves the listener on a very similar note that they entered on. Have fun, enjoy the synthy sounds, bop to the beats, and smile.
Spiral Stairs is a wonderfully fun and engaging LP from Black Dice's Eric Copeland. Out now on Les Albums Claus, this limited vinyl edition will speak to any fan of quirky electronica as well as those looking for something to spruce up their summer drives. Not taking itself overly serious, but serious enough to make a statement, Spiral Stairs is a really excellent and outrageously fun album. Paul Casey
