Scream For Help - Scream For Help [The White Visitation - 2021]From late summer last year this self-titled release is the debut from Scream For Help, which is a new(ish) one-off walled noise/ textured noise project from US noisemaker Sean E. Ramirez-Matzus (theNIGHTproduct, Thin Mountain, Black Leather Jesus, Last Rape, etc). The release appeared as a made to order C32/ digital download- I’m reviewing the latter. The release features two tracks- and these each have runtimes between fifteen and seventeen minutes apiece. The first track “I” opens with a minute and a half film dialogue sample- which features mainly a man and woman talking about pain and sexual prevalences, with it finishing with the woman saying she’s bleeding. When we kick into the noise, we find a rapid blend of on/off blunt bass juddering, muffled hiss, and subtone bay ‘n’ buffer. It’s a stripped back-yet dizzyingly persistent track, which has a rather low key industrial feel to the way the textures are laid out/ presented- all offering a rather distinctive & original take on textured noise making.
Next, we have “II”, and here we find a blend of beaded ‘n’ hacking bass, slicing-to-slightly jittering static focused mids, and a distant shifting whistling tone, which at points sound like they are slowing than speeding up. The elements are weaved together in a tighter & taut manner- it’s a most creative take on the textured noise form, and this time around I’m getting more of a seared sci-fi industrial vibe to the proceedings. Within its last few moments, a shaky/ watery tinged sample appears- this finds another film sample, this time it's of two young women talking about being too young to settle down- then someone attacks them, with painful screams ensuing.
In finishing this is a most promising release from this recent(ish) project from Mr Ramirez-Matzus, really showing a creative/ inspired use of textured noise- I look forward to hearing more of these one-off projects.Drop by here to pick up the tape/ download the release. Roger Batty
