Placenta Lyposuction/Rapace - A un domani senza alba [Gates Of Hypnos - 2021]A un domani senza alba is a wall noise collab that takes in two thirty-five minutes examples of hacking bass 'n' jittering static based wall-craft. The digital release brings together the long-running Croatian project Placenta Lyposuction, and Italian project Rapace- which has seemingly been active since 2019. This release appears on Poland’s Gate Of Hypnos- which is not a total wall-noise focused label, though in recent years they have released a fair few releases from the genre. The monochrome cover is a fairly grim and ghoulish affair- with a crumbled illustration of what looks like a malnourished corpse- the release title translates to 'a tomorrow without dawn'- so there’s nothing remotely light or bright here.
The release is split into two thirty five minute tracks that are simply entitled A un domani senza alba I & II. So the first track brings together this slowly rumbling ‘n’ rolling bass tone, with rapidly jittering ‘n’ snapping static. The low end has a great sort of distant-yet-persistent thunder quality about it that’s is decidedly unique. The static texturing while not as original, does feature a nice selection of cluttering and hacking patterns- with later on some nice smaller stunting and rattling sub-tones coming to the fore. All in all a rather appealing and fairly original sounding 'wall'.
The second track brings together a grey, faint, and persistent bass hack, with hiss bound static jitter. The low-end has a nice feeling of relentless oppression, while the topping jitter feels nicely weathered and weak in its attack- as if the bass hack has worn down its spirit. The low-end isn't as distinctive as the first track- though together the elements create another appealing enough ‘wall’- which keeps you locked into the ‘wall’ for its runtime.
I’m of course very familiar with the work of Placenta Lyposuction, but have never heard anything from Rapace- so this collab has made me keen to check out more of their work. In conclusion, this is a worthy release- the first track is something rather distinctive, but the second is far from bad either- and together they make A un domani senza alba a release worth checking out. If you’d like to do just that head here. Roger Batty
