Francesco Terrini - Hell [Harsh Noise London - 2020]After releasing around fifteen shorts & a few splits Hell is the first full-length release from Philippines project Francesco Terrini. And what we get here is a fairly even mixture of noise & ambience. The release comes in the form of a five-track CDR- which appeared on British noise label Harsh Noise London a few months back. Most of the tracks here fall between eleven and sixteen-minute mark, and really each has a similar blend of noise & ambient traits present. So this might not be the most variety heavy records- but we do get a good enough atmosphere present, that I can see appealing to either more moody PE fans, or those whole like obscure/ lo-fi electro based Black Metal.
The album kicks off with “The Plague Excluding From The Horses”- here we find a jittering electro textured joined by a compressed & skitter bay ‘n’ growl. Underneath we have these swooping ‘n’ wailing ambient tones, which are fairly bright/ harmonic, though there is some unease too. By track three we’ve moved to the longest track here “Labyrint of The Chosen Undead”- this begins with a fading in & out haunted swirl and ebb- at around the minute mark, lo-key sheets of chopping & droning noise appear, along with painful whined & bayed vocals.
Second to last we have “Mystical Warfare Of The Ancients”- here we find a slowly jaunting-if-wonky waltz synth melody/ faint sampled choir swirls, and gunning noise textures- it's topped with the baying vocals that rather brought to me mind the first Evil Dead film. The album is topped off with “Conjuration Of Astaroth’s Deal”- this starts in a fairly similar fashion to the other tracks, but gets more filled with layers of glimmering keys, waving churning & of course those vocals again.
In finishing I think Hell certainly shows promise & a fairly original blend of ambient and noise genres. It’s just a pity that many of the tracks sound too similar, meaning playing it as whole sixty one minute sonic experience is rather one dimensional.
