Black Leather Jesus - Hell [Deadline Tapes - 2020]Originally released back in 1995 as part of a boxset, then in 1996 as a stand-alone C60 Hell is early work from US harsh noise collective Black Leather Jesus. It sees the then six-piece project moving between dense & moody noise/ambient cross-breeds, searing ‘n’ raging textured harsh noise, and murky/ thick PE edged harsh noise. Here on Deadline Tapes is a recent cassette/ digital reissue of the release. Hell first appeared back 1995 as part of the four C6o tape boxset Wise Men Still Seek Him- by that I’m guessing that means the material here was recorded 94/95. The collective thought well of the release- as 1996 it got a stand-alone release- and it’s certainly great a snap-shot of the project in this early period.
For this release, the line-up was Herman Lin, Josh Gaudet, Richard Ramirez, Rick Bailey, Ryan Hunt on electronics/ noise, and David Gilden on guitar. The release features three tracks on side one, and two on side two.
We open with the slowly building noise/ ambient layers of “Infinity”- this brings together reeling & fleeting harmonic drones that sound like they created from old film scores, chopping & pummelling industrial noise blunt-ness, distant baying junk sways, and slowly sweeping darkly curdled ambience. As it progresses more bounding junk & noise swings occurring, and from time-to-time, you can hear distant raging male vocals. Side A’s final track “Dry Wind” finds a waving & sluggish blend of bothersome & baying low-end noise tones, higher-pitched junk sweeps & whines, and occasion creepy through-teeth like harsh male whispers.
Moving onto side B- and we begin with “Chorus Of Slaves” here we find a backdrop of broodingly simmering organ with eerier to lo-key purring noise ‘n frog croaks. This is topped with sudden & a lot louder blends of spaced out-to revered junk metal abuse, muffled-to-animalistic male vocals, and later old radio audio drift - all making for a most unbalancing & unpredictable track. Next, we have “Static Demon II”- here we find a mixture of hovering & searing almost harmonic purring, forking-to-baying feedback, and scrawling guitar noised-up guitar tone- with later on the addition of more whispered-to-morphed baying ‘n’ wailing male voice tones added in to great unnerving effect. This track feels tenser & ear grating, though once again there’s quite an unpredictable/ jarring quality about it- as the layers nicely shift & searing in a nicely loose-to woozy manner.
Sadly this recent cassette edition of Hell has how now gone out of print- with only a digital download of the release remaining, but it's still well worth downloading. Lets hope one day soon that some label decides to do a larger edition boxset of Black Leather Jesus work- as they are most certainly an important & highly distinctive project with in the worldwide noise cannon, are far too much of their work is out-of-print.
