Clive Henry/ Cannibal Ritual - Gruesome Torture [Meat Hook Butchery - 2020]

Here’s we have the 7th Volume in the 'Gruesome' series from Germanys' Meat Hook Butchery label- and once again the release is a two CDR set offering up two full-length shots of walled noise. This time we get a disc from the  at times progressive (though not for this disc) UK based Clive Henry, and Germans Cannibal Ritual offering up one of their most consistent releases in some time.

As with the other six Volumes in this series, the two white-labelled CDRs are presented in a double DVD case, with a one-side inlay sheet. For artwork, we get a monochrome picture of a group of bloody & blindfolded men tied to a series of poles. As with the rest of this series, the release is ltd to 50 copies- so you’ll still be able to get your hands on a copy of this.

So on the first disc, we have four tracks from Mr. Henry- these run between nine & twenty-one minutes, with a CDR total runtime of sixty-five mins. The sound on all of these tracks are a lot more straight forward & brutal wall-craft, compared to much of his other work that has often progressive elements such as both complex layer texture & different genre traits mixed in. First up we “Survive By Buying Others”- here we beginning with a blend of deep bone grinding-to-boring low-end, and persistent feasting popping & snapping static. At around the four & a half minute mark, we get a single sustained high pitched whine- then the ‘wall’ kicks back in with a blend of the original low-end tones, and thicker rattle ‘n’  grainy shaking noise matter- for the remainder of the track we get the same low –end textures, with a  shifting blend of thicker static grain focused texturing. Next is “Survive By Selling Others”- this opens with a hiss bound & chalky hazed blend of tight churning lows & seared rattle/ judder bound mids, save for some slight textural shifts from both central elements the ‘wall’ is fairly set.  Next is “Survive By Selling Yourself”- this is the baby of the four tracks coming in at near nine & half minute mark, and it’s also one of more seared & nasty of the tracks too- we get a mixture of sustained hissing & swirl scabbing noise, that’s topped with a line of pop & snapping static- it really is a very crude &  grating. So last of all on this first disc we have “Embrace Death and live”- this opens with a blend of bothersome-yet-wide sound grind low, and thinner rattling’ skipping texturing on top. As the track progresses we get slightly more roughshod skipping ‘n’ spin tones been thrown in, as well as possible a  slightly slowing. On the whole, this disc severs up a good selecting of more raging and seared wall matter.

Moving onto the second disc & we find five tracks from Germans Cannibal Ritual- these run between seven and seventeen minutes, and once again a full CD runtime of sixty-five minutes. First, we find the wonderfully titled “Amputated Genitals”- this brings together a blunt & baying low-end, swarming & micro rattling mids- all creating very compelling & nastily feasting opening ‘wall’. Next, we have “Tortured By The Primitives”- for this ‘wall’ we find a mixture of grinding & throbbing lows, which are edged by dragging & knocking junk textures- the bass element here really recalled the abstract & brooding score to Tobe Hoppers original Texas ChainSaw Massacre- and of course the dragging/ rattling elements bring to mind creepy & death stinking farm buildings. Track three is “Hacked to Death”- and here we find a blunt rolling churn and sparking rattling topping- again it's a very nasty yet brooding in its attack. Next, we have “Brutal Abortion Pt III”- this brings together a chopping & rotating buzzing spin, with rapid cluttering like lawnmower blade tone- another very nasty yet atmospheric 'wall'. The disc is finished with “Infected By Gangrene” here we find a mixture of churning & knocking descent and circling mass swirl & grating rattle.  All in all, this is a great, great disc- standing with some of the best work I’ve heard from this project.

Seven Volumes into this great wall-noise series and the quality of the contributors is still very- both discs are worthy, but if pushed I’d say the second disc is the best of two- as the whole disc is really damn great.
