Jel - Soft money [Anticon - 2006]

Jel’s second solo album Soft Money is a addictive mix of head nodding beats, slick airy production and enough variation from song to song to keep you listening without getting bored. Or bog down with pointless samples, which is a lot more than most DJ/producers albums. Every sample and every beat has its place, to make a more fulfilling and relistenable album throughout.

Jel is wellknown, for being one of the main musical mainstays of the Anticon collective. He's been involved with such classics as: Deep Puddle Dynamics's The Taste Of Rain and Themselves' The No Music .

We drop down in lots of different musical territory along the way: from the laid back almost eastern vibe of All Day Breakfast to the eerier triphop/pop beats of All Around (with hypnotic and edgy singing by Stefanie Bohm). Sweet cream, with its caughty guitar sample, tied to beats that'll, have you swaying in your chair.

Other highpoints (though the album hardly has any lowpoints): WMD mixes nice Bush-attacking, powerful rap courtesy of Wise Intelligent, with nice funky drum work, layered up with a some neat samples. Jel takes up the mic on To Buy A Car and he has great laid back delivery topping off the headnodding funky track, lined with great synth licks.

This is one of the highlights of the year so far and another confirmation that Anticon are melding old and new in a very satisfying way.
