Corrupted Light - Worship [Required Right Of Return - 2018]Worship severs-up two thirty minute slabs of active ‘n’ sleazed walled noise from French project Corrupted Light. The release appeared in April last year- coming in the form of either a CDR or digital download on French noise label Required Right Of Return- sadly the physical release of the album are all sold out now, but you can still download it. The CDR appears in a thin DVD case- featuring a kinky & shocking monochrome picture of a man's head with a women’s stocking foot stuffed in his mouth, and a stiletto shoed food pressed against his eyes- this picture is repeated on the CDR it’s self. On the back, we get a series of kinky texts outlining what we see on the cover.
Corrupted Light is from the north-eastern French city of Nancy. Seeming been active since 2016, the project focuses on a decidedly kinky themed noise matter- be it power electronics, scuzzy harsh noise, and HNW. So far it’s released around six releases- taking in stand-alone cassettes, CDR’s & digital downloads- as well as few splits with the likes of fellow noise perverts Anonymous Masturbaudioum & Please Kill Me now.
Sound wise this release very much sits in the active & shifting walled noise side of things, with the tracks simply titled Worship I & II. The first track begins with a densely tense blend of circling ‘n’ roast crackle and seared ‘n’ shedding jitter- these central layers are often added to by off pattern rushers, sudden gallops & slices on textured noise. As the track moves on I can also make out the odd flecks of descending ‘n’ sleazed synth bass descent & swoop- which nicely deepens the feeling of sleaze to the whole thing. The wall is both smothering and intense, yet oddly appealing in its attack- sound wise I’d say it brought to mind the type of thing Anonymous Masturbaudioum does, but with slightly less precision & control.
The second ‘wall’ picks up a more manic & messy feel with a mixer of swirling rush, slower crackle bound descending static, and circular jittering. I think of the two tracks this is structural less shifting in its feel, but it certainly feels more so because of the way the ill-fitting textures are brought together in a manic & often muddled manner. If, as I did, you attempt to follow the path of each texture- it really starts to screw with your head, as you can seemingly never fully follow a single layers path. It lacks the subtle moody sleazed harmonic vibe of the first track, but instead goes for a more brain scrambling, though still fairly suffocating attack.
So in conclusion, if you enjoy the actively layered & sleazed themed wall-work of Anonymous Masturbaudioum- I think you’ll enjoy Worship. Sure neither tracks show the level of textural skill & textural invention of AM work, but it’s certainly in the similar vein Roger Batty
