Cannibal Ritual - Hunting For Manflesh [Geraeuschmanufaktur - 2018]After a few years of dormancy Hunting For Manflesh is the first new material from this notorious cannibal themed German HNW project. The release comes in the form of either a C30 cassette or digital download- both of these offer up two fifteen minutes examples of grittily seared wall-noise brutality. The release appeared in a physical edition of thirty copies on German label Geraeuschmanufaktur- this takes in a white shelled cassette which features a white & black label taking in an old drawing of men hacking up a human body. The single-sided monochrome sleeve features more cannibal drawings, and the inside case features a hand number. As of completing this review the label still has a few copies left, but I wouldn’t hang around if you want to snag a copy.
The first track is entitled “Lacerated”- here we find a hellishly tight & constricted mixer of coarse 'n' grind-bound jittering, and meaty ‘n’ deep roasting judder. These two elements are propelled along at a set/ mid-paced manner, and at times it almost as if they are each trying brutal worming into each- to become a grinding & meaty white-out, yet this never happens with things always just keep on the cusp. The sound here is very full and crushing- though maybe not as lo-fi & crude as some of the past work from the project. On the whole, it’s a brutally satisfying wall, which will nicely grind & mince your mind.
The second & final track is “Disembowelled”- here we get a slightly looser, yet not less crushing wall. Here we get a blend of roaring ‘n’ droning low-end, and this is surrounded by a thinner mixture of wide swirling jitters & crisp fuzzes of static. The track's title fits perfectly as you can imagine some crudely ripped & torn fleshy cavern been rapidly & greedily pulled out ‘n’ munched. There’s a really nice constant between the two key elements, a crunching production, and enjoyable separation between the layers- all making for a most appealing wall, which has some nice audio illusions going on.
It’s great to see Cannibal Ritual reappearing once again, and Hunting for Manflesh is a good return to form- maybe not as lo-if & crude as a past release, but both walls here are damn brutal & satisfying gut grinding in their attack.
