Bruising Pattern/ No123noise - Waiting For Life To Get Better... [Required Rate of Return - 2017]Waiting For Life To Get Better... is a two-way walled-noise split, bringing together Austria based Bruising Pattern & US/ Texas-based No123noise. Each party offers up a single twenty-minute track, and the releases comes in the form of a CDR in a slim DVD case. So first up we have Vienna based Bruising Pattern- this project seemingly started last year and has so far ramped-up an impressive coming on for twenty releases- taking in splits & stand alones. I’ve so far heard a few releases from the project and felt decidedly split between been impressed(Life As Seen Through A Distorting Lens) and a little under-whelmed( Split with She Destroys Hope ). So I wasn’t sure what I was going to get with this- but I’m happy to report the track "Scarring Upon Veins", is a worthy & fairly distinctive wall. The whole thing starts out with a choppy & bass bound almost rhythmic feel- but fairly soon this gets less defined & hazed as we get a nicely slurred & loose blend of buffeting 'n' hacking blunt bass textures, which are surrounded by thinner buffeting & rattling sub-tones. As the ‘wall’ progresses all the textures start to nicely blend & melt into each other to create this wonderful sludgy & bluntly battering vibe, which really sucks you in nicely.
Next, up of course we have a track from Texas-based No123noise- this project has been active since 2014 and has seemingly moved from Harsh Noise Wall, Drone, & Dark Ambient- within recent years the sound more focusing in on HNW. The track here is "Everything Is Better When I'm Asleep", and this is a more common garden- though no less worthy example of wall-matter. The track is a mix of a constant rattling mid, thinner jittering static mesh, and very buried & distant bass rumble ‘n’ tumble. The ‘wall’ has a nice biting & brutal crude-ness to it, with the buried sub-tones adding a sort of brooding mystery to the whole thing. Much like the first track, there is a certain amount of blending & blurring of the textures occurring here, and on this track, it creates the sonic illusion that at points the ‘wall’ is pushing-out & bulging in places- when in reality things are very much set & firm.
So, in conclusion, Waiting For Life To Get Better...is a satisfying split with both parties here offering up worthy & entrancing ‘walls’- if pushed of the two I’d say the Bruising Pattern track is my fav, but it’s just by a hair. And as of writing the label still, have copies left of the CDR. Roger Batty
