Yair Etziony - Deliverance [False Industries - 2018]

Israeli expatriate in Berlin, Yair Etziony's 6th album is his first since his relocation to Germany. This experimental composer harnesses the darkness for his latest, Deliverance. Using many instruments, both old and new, Yair's newest composition is a thick, dark, physical slice of industrial ambiance.

Deep, dark ambient with rich, industrial overtones, Deliverance fades into with a futuristic grimness and never looks back. "Justice" opens the album on a very serious, semi-plodding note, like a fly-by over a swarming factory from a distopian future. This bleak overview not only continues with, but is deepened by the following tracks. While not the scene setting panorama "Justice," "Am Aller Ecke" reveals a ground level approach to the restless landscape beyond the factory's heart, and adds a context from which this opening can draw further meaning. At the heart and soul of the factory are the machines. Quieted by the night's inactivity, they're free to release their souls on "Gesundbrunnen Ghosts." This somewhat beaty exposition is dark and industrial, but somewhat light and lovely. It's a wonderful mix. Throbbing with the resurrection of the sun and the new day ahead, "Unterwelt" chugs forward with oscillating joy. This propulsive track uses speed to its advantage, and this one doesn't even feel close to its run time. Building up steam and production for the day, "Unheimlich" has the process begin. More empathetic to the cause than "Justice's" overview, this is feeling on the machine level, safe from man's judgement. "Deliverance" closes the album out with a soft, bongo-y approach. Sharing some of the shrieks of industry, this track serves as a nice closer and a fade out from the scene that had been presented to us previously.

Yair Etziony's latest is an engaging piece of industrial tinged ambient that often times carries a subtle groove. Feeling like the souls of machines at play, Deliverance makes great use of the sounds at hand and crafts a wonderful, nearly futuristic soundscape. Never feeling its run time and worthy of repeat spins, Yair Etziony's Deliverance is a great piece of electronic music.
