Exhumed - Death Revenge [Relapse Records - 2017]

Death Revenge tells tales of grave robbing and murder for the sake of selling body parts. While not on the level of Quadrophenia, Death Revenge is still a fun, fast, gory album." />
If there's one thing that was probably never said, it was "we need a gore metal concept album." However, whether said or not, it was thought of and executed by California goremeisters, Exhumed. Set in late 1820's Edinburgh, Death Revenge tells tales of grave robbing and murder for the sake of selling body parts. While not on the level of Quadrophenia, Death Revenge is still a fun, fast, gory album.

Opening with a less traditional "Overture," and something more akin to a horror film's opening sequence, Death Revenge quickly breaks into metal mayhem with "Defenders of the Grave." Thrashing and pummeling forward, the jump into "Lifeless" makes one thing apparent; death metal isn't the best choice for a concept album. Maybe if I were thirteen again and interested in reading gory lyrics (or having to read lyrics in general) it would work, but if it's not an obvious, easy story, what's the point? That gripe aside, Death Revenge is build on some solid death metal acrobatics and pummeling, ground pounding fury. Add to that a couple of well played and very cinematic instrumental pieces, Exhumed's latest is a fun, Halloween treat. While less on the juicy, gore filled side than the seminal Gore Metal, Death Revenge sees Exhumed as a more finely tuned beast, able to undertake loftier projects.

Death Revenge is the latest from gore fueled death merchants, Exhumed. While ambitious in scope, concept albums aren't fit for every genre, and this one plays out like a standard death metal album. Sure, it's fun and very well played, but sadly misses the mark that Exhumed had set for it.
