Nightmare Castle - Frankenstein Meets the Spacemonster [Required Rate of Return - 2015]Here we have another slice of Horror/ sci-fi B movie themed walled noise from Louisiana based Nightmare Castle. This release comes in the form of a CDR on French label Required Rate of Return, and it offers up a single track that comes in just under the fifty minute mark. The theme for this release is campy & bad 1965 Sci-fi movie Frankenstein Meets the Spacemonster( aka Duel of the Space Monsters). This films plot revolved around a group of martins who invade earth to gather female women for breeding- the films thought of as one of the classic so-bad it’s good movies, which got voted number seven in a worse movies ever made list. The track opens with a brief sample of cheesy dialogue from the film talking about victim slowly rotting away & dieing in agony. When the ‘wall’ comes in it’s a basic yet successful mixture of chalky juddering ‘n’ grainy jittering that are meshed out into a dusty & aged ‘wall’. The whole thing is manly set firm through-out, though from time to time you do get a few jolts of off texture/shunting juddering occurring. The whole thing very much has the feeling of a low-budget black & white b movie like Frankenstein Meets the Spacemonster. All in all this is another fairly textbook example of Nightmare Castle take on walled-noise, and while the make-up, and textures used are simple the project managers to keep ones attention held though-out in it’s aged & monochrome way. I can’t say this stood out as my favourite release from the project, but it’s rewarding enough, and well worth checking out if you’ve dug the projects other output. Roger Batty
