Welter In Thy Blood - Todestrieb [Dusktone - 2013]Welter In Thy Blood are a three piece LA based project who create a truly nightmarish & tar black mixture clunking ‘n’ churning percussion, stretched-out & bleak doom, and blacked ribbed noise dark ambience. “Todestrieb” is the bands third releases, and it truly takes the listener to a very hellish & darkly curdling sonic place. As soon as you pick-up the CDs monochrome digtpak, you know your going to be in for a very bleak, nasty & hopeless ride. The font cover take in a pair of clenched fist- wrist side up, and it looks like there are two blood slashes across both wrists. Inside you get a grim picture of a dead pheasant, and a arm & hand spread out as if it’s going to hammered into the below wood. The album conists of five tracks in all, and these last between just shy of five minutes up to a truly hope battering ‘n’ crushing sixteen plus minutes. With-in their sonic life times the tracks move between: stretched-out & torturous doom battering’s that are layered with pained vocal crawls, & clunking decaying junk yard percussion. Onto bleakly stripped & malevolent mixers of forking chimes & black guitar dirges. Through to eerier drifts of stark ritual percussion, wavering dark ambience, and chilling yet subtle noise texturing. Onto brooding bass purrs darted with stripped & malevolent guitar harmonics. Through to mixers of clear doomed guitar, sea field recordings, and stretched ‘n’ truly pained vocals. Onto wavering noise hazes mixed with chiming & held ritual tones. All told the whole album creates a very bleak, pained & harrowing journey. On the negative side I did find alot of the riffs here following a fairly similar pattern/ tune, and at times I wished the more experimental drifts lasted just a bit longer. But on the whole this is a rewarding & pained shot of experimental tinged suicidal doom Roger Batty
