Foul - Loss [Unlimited Drift Recordings - 2012]

“Loss” finds this long running West Virginia based HNW project offering up a C60’s worth of pummelling & unforgiving walled noise. With each side of tape featuring a single half-an-hour wall.

This tape was released in April 2012, and came in an edition of twenty three copies. The release comes in paper slip sleeve inside a plastic slip sleeve. The paper sleeve features a black & white photo copied picture of a fairly tranquil view from the side of a lake or stream with tree branches reflecting in it…..well as you’d imagine there’s nothing tranquil or lulling about the two tracks with-in.

The first sides ‘wall’ starts off being built around a jittering ‘n’ juddering weave of lo-to-mid ranged crackling noise tones, & underneath these is a distant hissing/ grey scrubbing tone. The juddering/jittering tones are bound together into a constant mat of locked noise, and the hissing/ grey scrubbing sound adds in a nice bleak & hopeless edge to the proceedings.  As the ‘wall’ progresses into it’s 7th minute the jittering/juddering elements seem to become slightly crisper & almost hopping in their feel, as your mind get sucked deeper & deeper into the tracks brutal sonic upholstery.  Around the 12 minute mark the jittering/ juddering elements seem to some how reduced & pair back with a more constant looped rolling texture coming to the fore- yet the jittering/juddering hopping textures still carry on….it’s almost like the ‘wall’ is very slowly but surely slowing down. At just past the 19 minute work we pause for a brief stripped & cold  wind drone moment, before we move into a new ‘wall’ which brings together taut drilling electro tone dwell that’s back lit by a locked & stark billowing noise drone backdrop. At the twenty minute mark we briefly drop down into the wind drone before returning to a fairly similar ‘wall’ to the tracks original textural make up of juddering/jittering locked texturing & a bleak/ grey under hissing drone...this carries on until around the 28th minute when it fades to replaced by a more galloping & intense ‘wall’ which just sort of suddenly ends as the tape runs out.

Side twos track is built around a churning mixture of roaring noise drone that is played over by a mass of feasting ‘n’ boiling static.  The ‘wall’ has this sort of semi sea-saw feel to it as it seemingly sways back & forth over the stereo channels.  This ‘wall’ is a lot more brutal & searing than the first sides track, and it really is an unrelenting walled attack from start to finish. The only real shift here happens in the last ten minutes or so, when the ‘wall’ seems to become a bit more dense & less sea-sawing in it’s feel, but the textures & their patterns still remain the same. All told it’s effective in it’s unflinching & scalding sonic brutality, but I’d say the first side track is my favourite of the two tracks here.

So “Loss” offers up the listener two intense & brutal bits of wall-making, with the first side track having some mainly subtle textural shifts, and the second sides track being a more unrelenting attack.
