Ecoute La Merde - Dedicated To The Living Dead Vol 1 [Disturbing Scenarios of Dying - 2009]Ecoute La Merde(meaning Listen to the Shit in English) is an French based active HNW project. And this first volume of Dedicated To The Living Dead( the second vol is reviewed here & featured A View From Nihil) sees the project offering up a single near on twelve minute track- so I guess you’d call this an ep or a single on a full sized CDR. The tracks ‘wall’ is built around a revolving and juddering pipe like tone, that’s underfed by sudden prods of different grains of static jitter and higher pitched glass jug or test tube filling tones. The track feels like your being sent through a chaotic, machine & test tube crowded laboratory on an endless moving conveyor belt. The revolving and juddering element stays fairly fixed through-out, but the other smaller and buried elements seem to be constantly changing. It’s certainly a different & interesting take on ‘wall’ making, through to my mind it seems at times a little to active for it’s own good, meaning you don’t really get settled into the track repetition as there are other elements that keep appearing. I’d still call this HNW, because there are certainly locked or ‘wall’ like elements at play through-out, but at times it comes close to pushing the edges of the genre. So a short, but original sounding slice of HNW matter, that certainly has it’s moments and quite unequal sonic approach. Through for me on the whole it just seems to lack that addictive and entrancing edge, meaning that your not likely to return to this once you’ve played it a few times. Roger Batty
