Clair Cassis - Self Titled [Starlight Temple Society - 2010]

The band Clair Cassis is a three piece from Oregon; this is their debut LP (Limited to 500 vinyl copies)from Starlight Temple Society.  While Clair Cassis is a new entity, 2 of the members (guitarist/vocalist Josh and bassist Angela) are from the now defunct Velvet Cacoon.

The seven songs presented here envelope the listener in a hazy black metal atmosphere.  While not quite raw black metal per se, it is peppered with melodic riffs and de rigueur shrieking vocals.  Most of the songs here are short, in fact the whole LP looms around 33 minutes in length.  Yet in those somewhat short moments are sounds that range from slow doom to whip fast drums and tremolo rhythms to acoustic guitars and experimental feedback ambience.

In that brief amount of time, Clair Cassis are able to enfold us into their harsh yet ethereal setting, and they do so in a way that feels natural and uncomplicated. Within the distortion and feedback there is something here that makes it feel organic as a whole.

Their ability to weave achingly slow riffs to early Hellhammer black metal while still keeping a dream-like aura is one not to be missed. For any fan of Agalloch, Secrets Of The Moon or Alcest, this would be a welcome addition.
