Ensemble Economique - No GPs [Digitalis - 2008]Ensemble Economique is the new project from Brian Pyle one half of strange, haunted and audio acid tinged soundscape makers The Straving weirdoes. And through No GPs is still very strange and deeply atmospheric this is quite a departure from the SW expansive and dense sound. The tracks here are firstly a lot shorter then most of the Starving weirdoes work falling between the 2 to 6 minute mark each. And the sonic tools used here are very different too with modified, twisted and bent American Indian, chants, music and percussive matter taking centre stage- along with various bent world music records samples. All topped off with the odd flecks of guitar elements and electronic textures all to make a collection of strange & mainly very rhythmic tracks that I guess could be described as dense ritual ethnic music meets post industrial psychedelics with the odd traces of more noise matter. It’s certainly a very original and distinctive mixture of sounds which Pyle mangers to sonically paint with real atmosphere, depth and heady invention. The album was recorded live though you wouldn’t know as there no audience sound and it also features Spencer Doran (Cloaks), Max Brottman, & Ryan Carlisle who help Pyle make the album heady ethnic and psychedelic air. A very interesting and creative new sonic turn from Mr Pyle that re-imagines his talent for strange and highly compelling atmospheres into a very different sound and vibe from the Straving weirdoes. But I advise acting very fast if you want to get hold of one of these- as its ltd to a criminally small pressing of 100 copies Roger Batty
