PCRV Quartet - Basementality [Somnolent Shelter - 2008]

PCRV Quartet are a four piece that sit nicely between guitar drone craft, impov, atmopshic soundscape and mainly subtle noise matter- this is the projects first releash.

The four use to creating their atmospheric, often subdued yet quite free sound a mixture of : bass and electric guitars, various effect peddles, prepared percussion, synths and laptops. The album offers up four ten minute plus tracks that altogether comes in just shy of the hour mark and I have to say they have quite an original sound managing to be drifting and free yet atmospheric and controlled, many of the tracks start with purring drones or risers then the four paint in smaller sonic details, subtle shift in tone and general interesting sonic events. There's often quite a brooding/ sinister feel to the work, but it also at times sounds quite spacey and psychedelic yet it never gets too crowded or dense & there’s a real nice feeling of space and cinematic pacing through out.

An enjoyable, atmospheric and creative debut album which though in places does show slight sonic naiveté offers enough dramatic, drifting sonic wonder to get lost in.
