Eskimo King - Weird Flag [Abandon Ship Records - 2008]

Eskimo King is the mainly solo guitar project of Brian Sullivan one half of the excellent Mouthus and it takes in quite different territory from Mouthus sludge/ psychedelic noise scapes.

On offer here are five unnamed guitar & effects tracks that are often built from many layers of shifting and effect ridden guitar textures. Track one opens with a haze of droning harmonic and expansive almost country gone electric vibe about it- Sullivan shifting layers of guitar texture beneath the original and front harmonic drone. Later on with track three he makes his guitar sound like stuck doom and delta blues as if heard through a sea fog of feedback. Lastly track five features honking guitar harmonics and looped cymbal crash- it feels like gone wrong, stuck blues heard through a detuned radio.

It’s interesting to hear Sullivan experimenting with new sounds and textures, but ultimately the tracks here often feel a little too unfinished and bedroom jam like for there own good.
