Emanuele Errante - Humus [Somnia - 2008]

The word Humus refers to any organic matter which has reached a point of stability, where it will break down no further and might, if conditions do not change, remain essentially as it is for centuries, if not millennia. So Humus is a very apt title for the 11 tracks that make up this album with each track concentrating on looped or stuck harmonic element thats mostly repeat on themselves to often captivating and hypnotic effect.

The track Fecunda opens the album with the center element been a graceful four second string sample that loops over and over in its lush spring coming to life tone, with a very slight sonic tinkling or pipe tone rising happing ever so often, with the track  easying you back into a hypnotic lushed-out state. Later on Radio hope takes up-beat and heady cinematic bassy jazz tones, a single note piano hit and string down folds to make and edgy/ shadow stuck noir feeling. Ant trail brings together a looped Steve Reich like piano element with this great investigating electro sound on top which brought to mind ants feelers assessing their surroundings. Through out the album there’s a nice variation between one track to the next with the album sitting somewhere between electronica, stuck cinematic and ambience

Like all of the Somnia releasers it comes in a sewn, sealed in wax, cardboard folder which is a nice and distinctive house style. All in all an album that offers a nice mix of dramatic and more lush/ soothing sonic moments to get lost in.
