Andrew Chalk - The River That Flows Into The Sands II [Faraway Press - 2007]The river that flows into the sands II presents the listener with five hypnotic, unfolding harmonic and sometimes melancholy drone based tracks, which have a very distinctive earthy, dank, rural and very English feel about them. It sounds as if he's using guitar and possible keyboards in some places too which he stretches and manipulates into harmonic drone worlds. The five untitled tracks last from around the 15 minute to under ten minute mark & though there’s a linked vibe and atmosphere running through all of the tracks, They don’t have to be played as a whole working quite well as stand alone slices of ambience. Track one brought to mind a slow walk around a roughly ploughed field one spring afternoon, as the hypnotic drone patterns circles in medatife earthy grace. Where as track four rather had the feel of descending into a settling dusk forest with all it’s wonder and growing eerier-ness. All the tracks here balancing nicely harmonics, atmosphere and sometime darker shades very nicely. It’s all packed in a rather nice hand-made, painted board folder which nicely heightens the music beauty and richness. A mighty fine and accomplished collection of drone works- to find out more & buy direct go to here Roger Batty
