BITTER SPINSTER - Scat Punk [Death To Dynamics - 2025]Scat Punk is the first slice of scuzzy & crude walled noise freefall from this new project from UK’s Tom Wilson(The Night Porter, Slowgurn, and Death To Dynamic label). This digital release takes in a single nearly hour-long track, which blends a constant searing rush & churn with fleeting darts of other tone/ texture. The release appears on Death To Dynamic, which has now switched from releasing a mix of Tom’s and other wall work to just releasing his own personal work. The cover artwork shows a picture of a man with longish hair- guessing it’s from the 60’s/ 70’s via the quilty of the photo. Over this is placed the project's name in bold, all in capitals, with the title just below it…I’m not sure who the man is, though he does look semi-familure. The album can be found here
The single self-titled track runs at fifty-six minutes and is built around the foundation of chugging/low-end drone, and more feasting cold snapping/ rattling mid-range subtones. Ever so often, we get an off-tone/ texture- be it a sudden higher end sear/ scrape, mid range wails, wondering bays, etc. The whole ‘wall’ has a scuzzy, at times shapeless feel, though this is part of its charm, as one's mind is constantly looking for patterns. It feels akin to trying to struggle through a half-lit cave network, that’s thick with stale/ rank air, with a keen sense of nihilistic oppression.
It certainly is nice to see another project embracing the crude and nasty side of the wall noise genre. And I’ll be keeping an eye out for future BITTER SPINSTER Work because the projects really do create all-encompassing, at times subtle detail shifting wall-matter. Roger Batty
