Flowers We Are - Flowers We Are [Klanggalerie - 2024]Here’s a self-titled debut that serves up two slices of improv, which slip 'n' slide between electro-minimalism & acoustic fumbles ‘n’ darts with the occasional melodic flourisher and orchestrated shift. It’s a decidedly unpredictable, often taut and seared ride, which travels through various sonic states. Flowers We Are is a Serbian trio bringing together Marina Džukljev: piano/ electric organ. Matija Schellander- drum machine/ sampler. Noid- cello. Each of whom has been active for some years within the contemporary classical, improv, and general experimental genres.
The first track is “Celeste” which is the longer of the two tracks at just over the twenty-five-minute mark. It moves from rapidly tensing & overlaying blends of string whine, electro purr, and generally chaotic bowing tonality. As we move on, we find moments of contact cable grain sustained, paring back to near nothing atmospheric string hoovers, string fumble ‘n’ drag, toilingly jaunting to tautly cascading keyboard runs, cautious bass tone picks, onto more formally musically moody & mysterious rises edged with touches of keen electro tautness,
The second track here is “Nocturne Butterflies” which slides in around the fourteen-and-a-half-minute mark. It starts off decidedly tense & wavering- with a mix of simmering atonal strings & fixed/ constricting electro purr. Shifting into hovering/ sustained pipe organ, weaved with tautly petering electro grain detail.
In conclusion, this is a release for those who enjoy their improv mixed in its acoustic & electronic flavours- with largely a focus on the unpredictable, at times abstract side of things Roger Batty
