Thorsten Benzel - Giallo Movie Posters - Volume Two 1970- 1971 [Creepy Images - 2025]Here we have the second volume in Creepy Images giallo movie poster book series. For this glossy/ colour throughout book, we focus on two of the most important years in the genre's development, 1970 & 1971. In 2002, Creepy Images, released Norman J Warren- Gentleman of Horror- a truly wonderful book tribute to one of the key UK horror directors of the 1970s. And of course, the first Volume of this Giallo book series from 2024.
The perfectly bound paperback book has a most appropriate yellow card cover- this features a high gloss laminate, with red and black text. In the centre of the front cover, we have an illustration of a bloody-handed woman reaching out, with a second woman, in sister green light, looking on. The A4-sized book runs at two hundred and thirty-two pages, being glossy/ full colour throughout
The book mainly consists of high-quality poster reproductions, printed on glossy paper stock. These reproductions are woven with joint English and German texts, which are largely sparse/ lightly informative with facts and observations, aside from lengthier texts for the book's intro, outro, and a brief overview of the genre.
The main part of the book is bookended with two Dario Argento films- we start with The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, and ends with Four Flies On Grey Velvet. And throughout, we get mention of Argento's impact/influence on the genre, though that’s not to say that there aren't also films that don’t follow the Argento formula.
As with the first book, we get a decent selection of different posters from different lands for each film- these are usually between four and ten varieties for each film.
And as you’d expect, there is a mix of the known/ celebrated, such as 5 Dolls For August Mood, and Hatchet For The Honeymoon- both by Mario Bava. And the more obscure/unknown like Enzo G. Castellari’s Cold Eyes Of Fear, Tonino Ricc’s Cross Current, and Lorenzo Gicca Palli’s western/ giallo crossbred The Price Of Death.
Giallo Movie Posters Volume Two 1970- 1971 is up to the high production levels of the first book, with crystal clear/well-defined reproductions of the posters. It's great to see the page count increase slightly with this second volume, and I hope this continues.
It truly is wonderful to see this series continuing, and long may it last!- if you have even a passing instrest in giallo but enjoy great poster art- this is a must. To order directly, drop by here Roger Batty
