Oblivion Ensemble - Seraphim Hallucino [Malignant records - 2007]

Seraphim  Hallucino as it’s title suggest is more than a little puzzling coming off like a bizarre movie for the head mixing; dark ambience, weird soundtrack elements, industrial touches, avant jazz mumurs, noise, strange vocal traces and all manner of found and discovered sound.

Your literal dropped into the album as the cover artwork and lyrics make little sense, the album art swimming in random dark imagery, the text seemly made up of word play and surreal banter. The Album starts with throws us into creepy nursery rhythm unfolding and amass audio environment that is very detailed, and unfolds from there like one long sound involving environment over the albums playing time. The thing that really seals this and make it convincing is the considerable musically and sound talent on display,as it  drifts from one musical soundtrack theme to another to one weird environmental sound construction to another. Thoughout  managing to keep ones attention  which is often the problem with this type of thing. I guess you can hear traces of more subdued Coil here, along with more sophisticated takes on what Ulver was trying to do with Perdition city more sound textured moments. Another reference point  would be a more weird and less musically version of Future sounds of London’s created sound environments, that appeared on both Life Forms and Dead cites to a lesser extent.

Clearly a lot of work has gone into the depth of sound design here and it’s an effective and odd trip. That has to be played as a whole and with head phone otherwise it makes even less sense.
