Fencepost - This Atrocious Nursery [Inner Demons Records - 2024]This Atrocious Nursery severs up four sonic slices of tangled, discordant, ugly, at points subtle creepy electro-acoustic improv. The three-inch CDR is themed around The Yellow Wallpaper- an 1892 short story by American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It's an important early work of American feminist literature- focusing on the mental & physical health of women in the 19th century. Fencepost is a UK project- who have been seemingly active since 2019. And going by their Bandcamp page, they’ve released around thirteen or so releases to date. This three-inch EP is on Florida’s Inner Demon Records- to find out more drop by here.
Each of the four tracks runs around four & five minutes a piece. We open with the wonderfully entitled “A Sickly Sulphur Tint” which brings together wonky neck fumbles, bass creaks ‘n’ bows, gloomily percussive fiddles, and the occasional eerie music box chime.
Moving on we have “Creeping By Daylight” Here we find a more spaced-out sonic map of wayward sting picks ‘n’ plucks, shapeless bass fumbles, slurred low-end creaks, and sudden seared bows. The release plays out with “Out At Last” which is all about slow-shifting clusters of neck clutter, bass creaking, sudden yawning tone envelopment, and unwell tonal scuttle.
This Atrocious Nursery will appeal to those who get their kicks from gloomy, grey, deformed fumble, and drag 'n' grate. I’ll most certainly be checking out more of Fencepost's output. Roger Batty
