FOMALHAUT :: NIMH - From The Longest Winter [Zoharum - 2023]From The Longest Winter is a collaboration between Poland’s Fomalhaut and Italy’s Nimh. It’s a seven-track ambient/ drone album with subtle industrial touches and guitar washed atmospherics. It moves between the broodingly simmering, to the brightly tolling & windswept, through to murkily driving & uneasy. The CD comes presented in a six-panel mini gatefold- this is a monochrome affair, featuring pictures of winter-battered buildings, plants, and fences. The release is ltd to just two hundred and fifty copies.
Each of the seven tracks feature runtimes between five and eight minutes. In the album's first half, we move from “Soul And Mud” which starts out all darkly stretching ‘n’ gliding synth craft- before shifting into a blend of distant grey rhythmic pulse, brooding sweep, and light textural shred. Onto drifting & bright tolling guitar tones meets the gliding ‘n’ sweeping hover of “Under A Cutting Wind”.
In its second half, we have “The Longest Winter” which pares darkly stretching ‘n’ baying electro tones with a clean ringing ‘n’ tolling guitar atmospherics. The album is finished off with “Last Day” which finds locked-down electric piano keys & indie guitar churn- for a rather largely life-affirming & positive vibe, and going by the tracks title/ the cover it's all about the final slip from winter into spring.
From The Longest Winter will appeal to those looking for ambient enclosurement, which shifts between the weather-battered, to the slightly more hopeful & lightly harmonic. Roger Batty
