V.I.L.E. - It Doesn't Stand For Anything Other Than Total Qu [Self release - 2023]V.I.L.E. is a new project bringing together respected US noise makers Richard Ramirez and Sean E. Ramirez-Matzus, with up ‘n’ coming noise creator Alyx Ill. It Doesn't Stand For Anything Other Than Total Queer Liberation is the project's first release- and it comes in the form of either a ltd C31 cassette or digital download- I’m reviewing the former. The red glitter see-through tape comes presented in a pink norelco case- this features a single-sided black and white j card cover, which takes ripped collage art of figures with guns & wearing balaclavas. With stickers and a classified fold-out document. The physical release comes in an edition of fifty copies, and of this review, there are copies still available. To pick up a copy or download the digital version of the release drop by here. The release features two tracks- the first one running just over fifteen minutes, and the second just over thirteen minutes track. First out of the gate is the lengthily titled “A Step By Step Guide On How To Use Inexpensive Toy Drones To Drop Surprises On Republican Senators” this opens a mix of roughshod low end junk noise batter ‘n’ buffet, which is edged with forking-to-warbling high-end- all creating a nicely woozy and uneven sonic terrain. By the fourth minute, we hear a more dragging-to-clutter rip-bound feel coming to the fore with some nice waving high pitch warbling tones being pulled out of the mass. And as the track continues, we shift into blends of feast grain tumble & billowing fork, cluttering grit & wincing whine, and warbling whistling’s edged jitter static flit. All in all an eventful & engaging noise track, which keeps you nicely on the bumpy sonic ground throughout. The second track is “13 Simple Ways To Get A Pig To Quit” this opens with a blend of stab ‘n’ slightly pulsing static haze, which is warped in a sleeve of piercing whine ‘n’ drift. As the track progresses we get more rattling mids, cluttery clusters, drifting billows, seesawing oscillations, and grate ‘n’ batters added into the sound weave. The three-piece nicely builds up a rewarding & slowly shifting layer detailed track, which is constantly ribbed by taut ready-to-explode tension. So this certainly is a promising opening shot from V.I.L.E.- with rewarding examples of nicely unbalancing noise craft on display. I’d say there is a Black Leather Jesus( the noise collective Richard & Sean are central to) feel to both of these tracks, though you can certainly detect Alyx Ill elements/ involvement too. Let’s hope this isn’t just a one-off, as these three work very well together to create engaging & sleazily roughshod harsh noise craft. Roger Batty
