Fair Complexion - Nicole Kidman At The World Premiere Of Eyes Wide S [Self release - 2022]This lengthy and rather clunky titled release features two fifteen-minute examples of texturally battering ‘n’ baying walled noise. The tracks here are created around source recordings of actress Nichole Kidman- both on the red Capet and being interviewed- during the release of Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut, which saw her acting alongside her then real-life husband Tom Cruise. This is a digital self-release- with the cover artwork featuring a picture of Cruise kissing Kidman on the red carpet. If you’d like to check out this release for your self-drop by here
As far as I can gather (as the projects not listed on Discogs) this is only the second release from Fair Complexion- who are from Norway, and is one of the projects from the mind behind Coffin Vomit. As the project's name suggests, all of their releases are themed around fair to red-haired women.
The source elements on both tracks have completely been obliterated and shifted into a series of glamouring and baying textures. “I” opens with a line of pelting hacks, which quickly build into a dense-yet-erratically battering 'wall', which brings together slightly pulled bass billows, cluttering mids, and clattering static descends. The whole thing has a baying wind tunnel-like presence to its flow, which gives the whole ‘wall’ a feeling of numbing reverberation.
“II” starts off with a blend of bayed bass rumble and cluttering static hack- both elements have a rather erratic quality to their flow, and at points feel like they are faltering/ slowing slightly. By its midpoint the textures are seeming grinding and rattling into other, and just towards the end of proceeds the static grain hack completely disconnects/ finishes.
While both ‘walls’ here feature a fairly similar tonal and textural range- there are subtle differences between the two, meaning these two tracks do reward focused headphone listening. I certainly like the concept behind the release, and the way the source elements have been rewardingly texturized into a cluttering and baying storm of sound. Roger Batty
