Vetus Supulcrum - A Shroud Of Desolation [ Signal Rex - 2022]Vetus Supulcrum is a dungeon synth project hailing from the Netherlands. It's mastermind is Maurice De Jong-a highly prolific artist, behind the likes of Gnaw Their Tongues, De Magia Veterum, Temple Mist etc, with his work moving from, black metal, industrial, the darkly experimental, and dungeon synth . A Shroud Of Desolation is Vetus Supulcrum sixth full length, released via Signal Rex on cassette and CD. Given the genre and the general approach in Maurice De Jong work, things are fairly straightforward. Beautiful synth manifestations with occasional narrative vocals and crushing melodies with their aesthetics leaning between the likes of early Summoning and Mortiis, two examples that combined can give a glimpse of what is all about. Furthermore, Vetus Supulcrum is infused with significant martial elements and thus, a marching feeling is apparent throughout.
Vetus Supulcrum has a strong black metal foundation, minus the guitars and the drums, so at points you can almost hear & expect BM blast beats!. The sound is exceptionally plural, polished, rich and thick, adding more heaviness to an otherwise heavy atmosphere. A combination of two genres, a perfect merging between black metal and dungeon synth by keeping the sonic bombardment and maximalism of the first and the delicacy of the later, in a rather harmonized manner. Neoclassical, folkish and of soil, of stone and of steel, brutal and eerie, with all the traditional elements plenty and quite heavy in their conception and arrangement.
This is an epic album above all and a work of epic proportions, thematically resolving around the occult, with the best qualities expected and delivered, covering all your aural needs from the genre and in every aspect. Exquisite! Grab your dungeon synth medicine here Karl Grümpe
