Vomir - O Clube de Gelo [Colectivo Casa Amarela - 2022]O Clube de Gelo is a recent C40/ digital download from the French black bag wearing master of walled noise Vomir. The release offers up a two-sided slice of unrelenting and hope grinding walled noise- that’s suitable intense, yet oddly appealing in its crude and wonkily battering intent. The release appears on the Portuguese label Colectivo Casa Amarela- coming in two versions- the C40, and the digital download- I’m reviewing the latter. The tape version of the release, which is sadly now sold out, is something quite distinctive- as the clear shelled cassette case, came presented in a lump of black tar-like material. You can check out pictures here, and of course, grab a copy of the DL.
O Clube de Gelo- translated The Ice Club, takes in two self-titled/ number tracks. So “I” is up first and here we find a mix of sustained rolling billow, cluttering static chugg, and hints of distant knock ‘n’ jitter. The billowing element is to the front of the mix, and this creates a feeling of washed-out drift. While the cluttering has a descending, at times slightly darting quality- though this darting,I think, is just a trick of the ‘wall’.
Next, we of course have “II”- and this is fairly similar to the first track- in both its make-up & feel. We have a slightly knocking ‘n’ bouncing billow, a hissing -to -cluttering static sweep, and a distant rumble. At points, this final element occasionally seems to be either climb and/ or waver, though one suspects, that once again these are a trick of the ‘wall' .
O Clube de Gelo is another consistent sonic brick in Vomir growing tall wall of releases- with his discography now nearly breaking the 400 mark. Certainly not a release to covert if your not already a fan, but if like me you enjoy the Frenchman's work, this is a most worthy purchase. Roger Batty
