Monolithic Torment - Sleeeping Lightly [Self release - 2022]Stepping Lightly features a single thirty-six-minute example of feasting and loosely juddering walled noise from US project Monolithic Torment. This is a digital self-release put out by the artists themselves. The cover artwork is of stark black and white photo of a pair of painted nail feet & lower legs. With the picture topped and bottomed with lines of solid pink, and pink texts for both the project name and title. All making for a simplistic blend of grim and the feminine. The release can be downloaded from here.
The single 36.35 track here is entitled “Heavy Breathing”. The wall is built around a constantly shredding ‘n’ loose mid-ranged judder, this is wrapped in a flowing mesh of feasting static. Together these elements create a 'wall' that mangers to feel both wonky and cluttering, yet persistently devouring. I am getting images of either a mass of busy ants attacking a slowly buffeting in the wind bag filled with decaying meat or sped-up footage of rot and decay breaking down an apple. The whole thing retains a set focus, though I am getting some rewarding audio tricky going on here, as at points it feels like the mid-ranged is bowing more, and the feast is getting wetter and more manic.
Stepping Lightly is the first new material from Monolithic Torment for 2022, and it is certainly a promising start- highlighting the projects great ear for both rewarding textures, and good even layer blending. So, I look forward to hearing what it has to offer over the coming year. Roger Batty
