Sado Rituals - Histrionic Personality Disorder [Gates Of Hypnos - 2021]Histrionic Personality Disorder is a thirty-nine-minute example of layered and detailed walled noise from this Polish project. And as the release title suggests the theme is mental health, and the ‘wall’ here certainly suggests troubled thinking and at points confusion. The release appears as a digital-only release on Poland’s Gates Of Hypnos- the cover artwork features a picture of two hands and a leg, that are covered in layers of paint- seemingly blending/ blurring into each other and the background. The Sado Rituals project started putting out work in the year 2019- with apparently their output being a mix of harsh noise, dark drone, and HNW/ ANW. According to Discogs they presently have around eight-five releases to their name- though as a fair bit of their discography has been digital, I’m guessing it would be more like in the 100 plus range. I think I’ve been aware of the project for around a year now and played bits and bobs of their work- I've reviewed a split they did, though I believe is my first time reviewing anything full length from them.
The single track here comes in at the 39.57 mark. And what we have here is a detailed, and largely well-mixed example of the genre- that’s both detailed and at points subtle shifting. We open with a blend of the following: a mid-range judder ‘n’ jump, and a tightly weaved sonic cage of static pop and snap. As we move on I’m making out the addition of a beaded and slurred bass pelt, rattle bound hack, and descending static crackle- though of course with this type of extremely detailed walling, it’s difficult to fully define what is real, and what is just a trick of the ‘wall’.
The layers are fairly well mixed and balanced, though at points they are slightly less crisp, defined and separated than they could be. The just shy of forty minutes runtime is perfect- if it had been longer I felt my concentration would have waned, and if it had been shorter it would have been so less entrancing/ rewarding.
All in all Histrionic Personality Disorder is a good enough example of detailed and layered wall matter- and I’ll most certainly be taking more note of Sado Rituals’s work in future. So, if you like wall craft/ textured noise that gets your brain working, this is something you’ll be needing to hear. Roger Batty
