Lina - Lina [Petite Soles/ Puke Pink - 2021]Lina is a recent noise project from Scott Kindberg (She Walks Crooked, Silver Moult, Black Leather Jesus), and Thomas Puopolo(Scarlet Diva, Fistfuck, Karl-Henrik, Black Leather Jesus)- it’s themed around Lina Romay- who was one of the main sleazy muses of euro-cult director Jess Franco. This self-titled release is from June of this year- on what would have been Ms Romay’s 67th birthday- as either a C20 and digital download- I’m reviewing the latter. The cover artwork features a garish pink backdrop, which features two film stills of Romay- one with her stocking feet on a chair reading a newspaper, and one with her looking surprised and saucy with a Victorian dress hat on. The release came in a generous physical edition of fifty copies- and to pick up the tape head here and the digital can be found here What we find on the release are two around ten-minute tracks, and sound-wise we get nastily sleazed wallish harsh noise. Both are untitled, so the first track brings together shredding ‘n’ baying static feasting, with shoring highs and occasional grating rips. It keeps feeling like it may suddenly haze/ drift out to silence but it never does- with the pair nicely pulling out and stretching the textures of the track- with some neat whistling forks appearing mid-way in the tracks run. The second track finds a blend of stretched hiss and cluttering-to-swirling static grained noise. Along with this fairly persistent flow, we find distant warbling drifts, stretched baying tones, and morse code like dwells. Of the two tracks I think I prefer this one, as we get a more persistent textured backing to the track, and the shifting noise detail the pair add on top is most rewarding. Let us hope this isn’t the last we hear from the project- as they have a fairly interesting/ original enough sound make-up, and of course it’s neat to see a sonic tribute to Ms Romay saucy ‘n’ sleazed charms. So in conclusion a worthy if short debut release from Lina. Roger Batty
