Whores Breath - Smeared Makeup [Basement Corner Emission - 2021]Smeared Makeup is an example of numbing and blunt walled noise making. The just shy of twenty-minute long single track release is suitable constricting and glum, creating a feeling of both detached unsettlement & clammy unease. This digital download release appears on Portland, Oregon based Basement Corner Emission. It features a cover taking in tried wallpaper, and pictures both a male and female face with smeared red lipstick on, making for a suitable garish-yet-lightly troubling cover artwork. Whores Breath is from Cincinnati, Ohio, and as far as I can gather it’s a fairly new project.
The single self-titled track rolls in at the nineteen minute and fifty-second mark. And what we find here is a ‘wall’ that blends rapidly billow low-end, with manically juddering and jitter mid-range. These elements are fed together to create a blunt and muffling mass of sound, which is both battering as it is numbing in its continually rush 'n' bay. Neither texture is that sophisticated or complex, but they don’t need to be, as the pull/ appeal of this ‘wall’ is the way the textures meet to create a rushing vortex of paralysing sonic trouble-ment.
Smeared Makeup is my first taster of Whores Breath work, and I must say I enjoy both the numbing ‘wall’ and its theme/ artwork. So I’ll be most certainly looking out for more of the projects upcoming work Roger Batty
