Himukalt - Between My Teeth [Helen Scarsdale Agency - 2021]Here we have another reissued/ expanded release from US necro-fed/ unease industrial noise project Himukalt. Originally released back in 2018 Between My Teeth, is a blend of tautly bounding-yet-often unwell synth lines, constricting and grey beats/ electronics, and tightly cut or muffled samples/ vocals. It’s a release that’s primed to unbalance and unsettling, and once again it’s easy to see why this project has been gaining such praise/ interest of late. Himukalt aka Nevada base Ester Kärkkäinen has been active since around 2016- with to date around eleven releases to her name. The project has gained comparisons with the likes of Atrax Morgue, though there is more nasty electro-bite and hazed- yet- swarming sadism to Himukalt’s unwell and sometimes violent sound worlds.
Between My Teeth originally appeared as a cassette release on Greece’s Several Minor Promises. This new version of the release appears as a 12-inch vinyl release on Helen Scarsdale Agency, and it features newly expanded artwork- with the six featured tracks getting a remastering. We kick off with the uneasy fly buzzing dread of “Cataclysm” with its tight and constricted bass drum hits, roaming vocal scrubs and bays, and murky drone undercarriage. Moving on we come to the spiralling and bounding noise-up sonic gruel of “I No Longer Belong”, through to compressed techno beat stab, whispered/ hazed vocals, and unwell tonal churn of “Mine”. With the release been finished off with nervy and wonky “Not Proper” which features spaced-out and stripped beat punches, muffled vocal/ sample hazes, and unease electron purrs. If you're looking for a tense, unwell, and often unnerving mix of old school industrial, atmospheric noise texturing, all tied up with a bow of modern-day self-doubt and inner persecution, you’ve got to pick up some of Himukalt work. And this 12-inch vinyl release is a great place to start!. Head here to find out more/buy direct Roger Batty
