Cervical Smear - Real-Death Enthusiast [Filth and Violence - 2019]The charmingly named Cervical Smear is an extremely mysterious German project- that zero is known about, aside from they’ve been active since 2017, put out around seven release, and they make a very dense & nasty blend of PE and death industrial with death and transgressive sexual themes. Real-Death Enthusiast is the project's second full length, and it sonically rams into your ears thirty-nine minutes of purely nasty audio filth. The CD appeared last year on Filth and Violence- a Finish PE & noise label- it’s presented in a decidedly unsettling white digipak sleeve which takes in monochrome pictures of dead bodies, human fetus, and naked spread legged-possible dead females. So most certainly not for those easily offended, but let us be honest if you're picking up a release by a project called Cervical Smear- you hardly expect a bright, joyful & nice time….this noise at it’s most unpleasant, sleazed, and perverse…so the package images perfect fit.
In all the album takes in eight tracks, and these run between three & six-minute a piece. Things begin very nastily with the track "Ptomain Meditation"- and aside from a few grim samples or moments where things pare back for slightly more sinisterly moody touches. This first track is a very dense & punishing blend of purring & throbbing death tinged synth sustain, baying & crashing junk drags, and roaring/ pained male vocals- that are ground & smeared into the other sonics. By track three “Cute Female Corpse” the sonic uncomfortability & searing-ness has been increased as we find a mixture of high pitch grain loop, wavering & sickly electro buzzing, and of course the bayed muffled vocals. And the album is topped off with two extremely grueling moments- first, there’s “Stoned To Death” this opens with a sample of a news report about a pregnant woman been stoned to death by her family- then we shift from a blend of wabbling female cries, male chatter, and grainy noise churn, moving onto bayed vocals over a crudely bubbling & sinister purring backdrop of fuzzed-out noise & brood. Then there’s “Babygirl” here we find a brew of choppy & angularly snaking electronics fed over by deep bayed male vocals.
Real-Death Enthusiast is a decidedly nasty and largely unrelenting blend of dense PE and suffocating death industrial. If you want to be sonically battered ‘n’ depraved then Real-Death Enthusiast will fit the spot- sure it’s a little one dimensional at points, but it’ll certainly do the job if you're after sleazy noise nastiness.
