Vomir - Black Bag Chapter II [Signor Ward Records - 2017]Black Bag Chapter II is the third release by this French walled noise legend for Signor Ward Records- an Italian (mostly) HNW label, that focuses in on nylon/ leg fetish wall-craft. The release came in three editions- a basic digital download, a standard tape version (which I’m reviewing), and an ltd VHS edition, featuring a tape, CDR( of Black Chapter I) & extras. Sadly all but the download is the only thing that is available on the label now. The standard edition came in an A5 baggie- this took in a double-sided monochrome sleeve that featured a series of pictures of a woman in bondage gear, with a black bag over the top of her head, licking a lollipop. The clear shelled tape comes wrapped in a folded up black plastic bag. All in all, it’s a fairly distinctive looking Vomir release- so if you’re a collector it would be worth tracking a copy down.
The 30 minute track is evenly spread over the two sides of tape; there is really zero progression/ change here( save for a seeming intensity of everything in it’s last few minutes)-so really it’s better to review this as just a single track, & also that’s how it’s presented in the digital download. The ‘walls’ a constantly searing, caustically brutalizing & primitive blend of grimy drone roll, a constantly cascading selection of low-end judders & tumbles, a fixed wind like rush, and rattling/clattering sub-tones. The track feels akin to a constant descend though murky & rancid water, as a cove of zombie piranha’s feast on your twisting frame. As we’ve come to expect from Vomir the wall is extremely thick & suffocating in its feel, with the normal feel of blunt crudeness present in both the way the textures are layered together & the general feel of the wall its self.
If your even vaguely familiar with some of Vomir’s truly huge discography( eleven pages & counting on discogs)- you’ll know what you're getting into here, and it’s pretty much what you expect. Personally, I found Black Bag Chapter II’s wall to be a rewarding sonic ear roast, with Vomir still managing to present a selection of worthy & brutally appealing textures, even after all this time. As I say with this one it’s either a digital download, or try a discog search for a copy. Roger Batty
