Vomir - Deliverance - The Living Dead Noise Box [Victimology Records - 2014]

This four CDR box set is one of the great lost recordings of the early Harsh Noise Wall scene- it originally appeared back in 2007, and  quickly sold out-  it has gone onto become one of the most mentioned works connected with Vomir & the wider walled noise scene. This recent reissue appears on Victimology Records in an edition of 50 copies.

The set it’s self has a fair amount of history connected to it, as the material here was released in a few different forms. The  whole thing started off as a single disc release on Maisonbruit( Vomir’s own label) in May/June 2006, and this first release( which is now disc one on this new set) came in edition of just five copies, and was sold in infamous Paris based experimental music store Bimbo Tower. This first disc sold out very quickly, and there was still demand for the release, so a second edition was made in 2006-this second pressing came in a edition of ten copies, and it added in a second ‘wall’/ disc which was originally called ‘obscure harshwall’( this now appears on the second disc in this new set, and it’s now untitled)- this new track came from the same sessions as the first disc.   The next edition appeared in 2007, once again on Maisonbruit- this 3rd edition came in the form of a four CDR set, which featured two new ‘walls’ recorded in January 2007, and this boxset came in a edition of 20 copies.

Package wise this new edition tries to recreate the lay-out & look of the original 2007 box set, but with a few extra new images. The set features on it’s front cover a horror comic book like drawing, which takes in two eye-less living dead ghouls, and in the foreground a naked women putting her arms up in seeming sexual ecstasy( apparently these were taken from French horror comics) . The back cover takes in the track listings, over a crude drawing of a split in half housing block. Inside each of the four discs feature more ghoulish illustrations/ pictures- discs one & two take in a semi naked white eyed women holding a skull out stretched & she’s surround by two other ghostly looking female forms, and disc three & four reproduce the illustrations from the front cover. Also featured in the set is a slip of card taking in Vomir’s original skull like logo, and a small sticker taking in the original cover artwork.

So lets get down to the ‘walls’ with-in, and first up on disc one we have the original track that started the sets history off. This Untitled track comes in at the 51.14 mark, and it's alot active & shifting than more recent/ modern vomir- but it's still very much walled noise. The track opens with a dense mixture of continual roaring  ‘n’ descending  mid- to-low-end noise tones- these are weaved by this faint buzzing ‘n’ wiring belt like mid-range noise texture. As the track progress the buzzing ‘n’ wiring elements sort of cut in & out of the ‘wall’, and these breaks can last a few mintues at a time. When these elements do return again they seem slightly altered & changed- moving from grinding ‘n’ pelting dwells, through slow whistling  sears & dips, onto to more roasting thick crackle, sweeping plane like buzzing, and searing spacey like noise synth oscillations. Yet though-out it all the low-end remains (fairly in place) , though at times the whole ‘wall’ seems to thin down slightly then thicken back up again in a time. Also from time to time I'm sure I can hear snippets of other sound mixed in too, at around the seven minute mark there’s this buried yet slightly higher pitched element- it sounds like a child chanting for a few seconds, and along the tracks length there are a few other occasions like this were one.  All told it’s a most interesting example of Vomir’s  early wall-making, and it’s most rewarding when played through ear phones so you can pick out the layer shifts & small sound events.

Moving onto the second disc, and here we have the second ‘wall’ from 2006-as already mentioned this track was originally entitled ‘obscure harshwall’, but here it’s just another untitled track here.  The track comes in at the 56.03 mark, and is the longest ‘wall’ on offer on this set. Like the first track on this set, this is once again fairly layer shifting in it attack- to start with the ‘walls’ built around a mid-paced selection of two or three feasting static mid-to- low ranged noise tones mats- these are weaved through with these buzzing ‘n’ slowly grinding higher texture, which flits in & out of the  ‘wall’ in it’s first few mintues. As the track moves on Vomir seems to add in more & more layers  of churning ‘n’ feasting noise textures; to start with these new additions stay in the fairly simlar tonal range to the initial feasting static tones…so this creates a feeling of pattern shifting yet pure static engulfment. As the track progresses from time to time more high pitched( through buried) buzzing ‘n’ grinding tones appear . Also once again, like the first track,  you do get thinner patches  static dwelling- yet these are mostly a little less thinning moments than the first track, and you get nice sweeping vistas of desert like tonal brutality & earth roasting.

On disc three we have the first of  the ‘walls’ from January 2007. And once again this is another untitled track, and it comes in at 48.34( making it the shortest track on this set). The track opens with a ‘wall’ that's built around several layers of deep roasting low-end, which have these slightly loser ‘n’ thinner searing wind like sweeps  running over the top. To start with you can detect some slight movement in the sweeping wind textures, but the deep ‘n’ thick roasting textures remain firm.  By around the 5th minute we seemed to have settled down into a more firm & fixed set of textures through-out the ‘wall’, sure we still get slight shifts in the roast winding (and now slightly jittering) textures- but these are fairly minimal, and for most part the track just seems to focuses in more & more on the deep hefty layers of noise tone. Around this point the whole ‘wall’ starts to feel like sonic equivalent of concrete been  slowed poured all around & over you- you can almost feel your shoulders starting to bow with the pure weight of this ‘wall’, yet the pace never really slows or dips, as Vomir keeps it intense, thick & truly punishing. In it’s last few mintues the thinner textures seem to return to create a pummelling layer of pelting urgency, yet the  deep low end still remain fixed ‘n’ firm in their intensity. Put simply this is one damn brutal ‘n’ meaty track!.

Lastly on disc four we have of course the second track from January 2007, once again it’s untitled, and it comes at the 50.06 mark.  This ‘wall’ slams straight in & pins you down with a mixture of rapid meaty juddering, that’s lined by smaller & tighter jittering textures. The vibe in this track feels a lot more urgent, yet it’s still damn weighty in it’s attack. Pretty much all the textural layers are fairly fixed & set from the outset, and the ‘wall’ remains that way through-out it’s running time- though at times it does feel like more and more textures are piling on top of each other, but I think this may just be a trick of the ‘wall’ it’s self. All told this  ‘wall’ is another satisfying and truly overwhelming example of Vomir at his most effective & brutal.

In summing this boxset, I guess you could say the first two discs/ ‘walls’ really lack the focus/ brutal discipline of  Vomir’s later & more familiar  form of unmoving wall-making, but for me these still work as a rewarding & layer shifting ‘walls’, and nicely show his development as an walled noise artists. The second two tracks/ ‘walls’ cover a more familiar  & fixed  walled noise ground, but both tracks are rewarding & moorish examples of his take on the HNW. So it’s great to have this box back in print, and I advise a rapid purchase if you don’t want to miss out on this.
