Vomir/Crucifix Eye - Self Titled [Forever Escaping Boredom - 2012]This C40 split brings together two European HNW acts- firstly we have the French master of the unmovable wall noise Vomir, and secondly relativity recent scene new comer Belgium based Crucifix Eye. Each project here offers up a side long slice of wall-making. The tape comes in full colour/double side pro-printed cover- it features on it’s a front cover a picture of old VHS video cassette with the projects name on it's label, & a skull reflection in one of it’s cassette windows. The inside features a psychedelic washed picture of a tape cassette & a pair of teeth!. So first up we have a untitled track from Vomir. This crude & battering ‘wall’ is built around a rapid mixture of focused & thick crackling noise which is underfeed by a mixture of juddering ‘n’ pummelling low-end churn/ gallop. When the ‘wall’ first slammed in, the crackling front texture very much reminded me of focused, dense & close-up sound of thunder; with the other elements rather creating a carriage-on—rocky road-vibe. So in a way there’s an almost intense & extreme gothic horror type vibe to this track. All told it’s a great example of what Vomir does best un-moving yet entrancing crusty lined brutality. Over onto side two, and we have the Crucifix Eye track which is entitled “Worship". This project creates a more cleaner, through no less brutal take on walled noise with their digital take on the genre. The track on offer here is built around a constant & unstoppable rush/ wash of rapid jitter ‘n’ juddering noise textures- the ‘wall’ gives one the feeling of put their head in a waterfall of pure static. From time to time slightly different textured tones boil, bubble or washes-by, making their way to the top of the ‘wall’- these elements shift ‘n’ swirl for a bit before once more been pulled back down into the unrelenting brutal wash. Where as the Vomir track felt cruel, crusty & horror fed this feels very bright & searing in it’s attack, yet there’s also a great feeling of total submersion & no escape too. It’s a great ‘wall’ and a nice contrast to the Vomir side.
So to summing up this is a most satisfying split, which has an almost Jin/yang type feel to it- with the vomir side been brutal, dark and earthy. And the Crucifix Eye been bright, searing water bound & unrelenting. Roger Batty
