Dave Murray - The Deserts Of Träun: Part III The Lilac Moon [Bruhtal Shocks Music - 2003]“This is the music to a story yet ‘untold’ – told by the music.” Instrumental music that tells a story. Some people might think that it is impossible to pull that off without lyrics. Former Estradasphere-drummer thinks different, his first release The Deserts Of Träun, part 3 of a trilogy, tells a story by using any kind of music to ‘describe’ various happenings. The music is some sort of audio comic book for which Dave hooked up with illustrator Colby Bluth who made illustrations for the CD. He also plans to make an animation about Träun. Any type of music you can think of is used to create atmospheres, paint pictures and specific instruments are connected to certain vibes and describe events. Of course, without lyrics the music relies heavily on the fantasy of the listener to make the science fiction epic visible in one’s head. The 24 tracks are ordered like a book and you should listen in one go, to get into it and follow the story. A synopsis of the story can be found in the interview with Dave Murray here at musique[machine].The Deserts Of Träun: Part III The Lilac Moon taps, as one would expect, from very diverse musical sources. Black and death metal alternate with Tuvan drones, country guitars, computergame music, Middle-Eastern parts, funk, techno, jazz and some unidentifiable parts pass during the 55 minutes. Some of the keyboard-based parts have a bit of a low-budget appeal at first, but at the same time they sound like computergame music from the eighties which pretty much turns it into something positive. All the 'organic' parts with 'real instruments' sound very professional. All the different parts form a continuous trip that takes you through various places and events. Although I didn’t have a literal story or happenings in my head the music most certainly takes me on a trip.Dave recruited many guests to play on the album which makes it even more diverse. Apart from the keyboards, flute, saxophone, bassoon, violin, didjiridu, soprano-voice and many others all tell us the adventures of ‘detective Mel Function’, ‘the BlackMetal Princess’, ‘Gary the sand elf’ and all other characters in the story. The Deserts Of Träun: Part III The Lilac Moon certainly is not just some pompous concept rock-album. Despite the limited budget the music sounds symphonic enough when needed. The diverse instrumentation and arrangements and all-over musicianship makes this music surely tell a story. This charming, adventurous and very entertaining CD will be available at CD Baby and Lobefood. You can listen to a sampletrack here.
