Vomir - Untitled(Beartown) [Beartown Records - 2011]This Untitled release from the tail end of last year was one of the larger editions offered of Vomir’s work- the CDR came in a edition of 70 copies, but sadly I found it one of the least effective releases from the black bag wearing French HNW maker. Firstly the artwork/presentation of the release feels very slap-dash, thrown together and amateurish. The CDR is badly spray painted/ splattered in black paint. Then we have a rather slapped together & uninspired bit of collage artwork on a fold out bit of A4, A black plastic bag (this is the only positive & relevant part of the package), and a ripped out sheet from a women’s gossip magazine!? Moving onto the disc it’s self, and we have a 73 minute track on offer here. And I’m afraid to say it’s one of the most dull & unrewarding bits of walled noise I’ve heard from Vomir…..as any regular readers of M[m] will know I normally have a lot of time for this project, but this track just feels boring, ineffective & hollow in both it’s noise selection & it’s execution. The track is built around a fixed & unmoving mix of muffled up ‘n’ down billowing sub-droned noise matter, which is played over by this mix of jitter mid end static. There are none of the often clever interlocking textures of Vomir work, and really this track doesn’t really sound very crusty or crude either…it just seems to batter on & on in a underwhelming manner. Every artists has his off day, and I guess that’s what this is. It’s just a pity he decided to have an off day on one of his larger edition releases, because a lot of people who don’t normally buy Vomir’s work would have picked this up & really got a poor impression of this normally very effective walled noise project.
