Vomir/Goghal - Amour Du Fossoyeur/Morbus Mora [Zvukovina - 2012]This split on Sarajevo based Zvukovina label offers up two slices of dense ‘n’ pummelling walled noise from two European acts- firstly you have a track from the black bag wearing French king of HNW Vomir, then secondly you have a track from consistent newcomer Belgium based Goghal. Each project here offers up a ‘wall’ that comes in at exactly 14.40 mark, which I guess is a little odd & implies the timing might mean something, though nether the releases packaging or the labels website explain the reasoning behind the precise timings of both tracks. First up we have the Vomir track which is entitled “Amour Du Fossoyeur”, which translates to Love of The Gravedigger. And this track finds the Frenchman offering up a fairly typical through very rewarding slice of crusty ‘n’ crude thick wall-making. The ‘walls’ built around a consistent mass of very crusty ‘n’ muffled mid pace juddering, that’s lined with jittering ripped static texturing. Running under the main ‘wall’ is this great rumbling & subterranean like shadowy muffled drone ‘n’ soil mumble, and this creates a great feeling of muddy yet violent dread that summons up images of the living dead awkwardly breaking through the earth of thier graves to get to their beloved gravedigger. And second/ lastly we have the Goghal track “Morbus Mora”, which on the CDR is sequenced directly after the Vomir track so you get an effective slight textural shift/ jolt. Where the first Vomir track was muffled & almost brutally unfocused this ‘wall’ is a lot more taut ,tense & defined in it’s textures. The ‘walls’ built around a deep rumbling mid paced noise drone, & a urgent juddering cracking like texture. These two tones batter away at the listener in a very brutally appealing manner, and through this track is once again dense & thick walled noise the two tones often shift dominancy with in the ‘wall’- with at times one texture been literally mowed out of the way by the other texture. All told it’s a great slice of dense wall making with some very effective yet brutal textural shifts taking place along the way This release comes in either a CDR( which I reviewed) or tape form. And I must say it’s a very rewarding split with both parties create both brutal yet highly consistent tracks Roger Batty
