Vorg - Järven [Aaltra Records - 2012]“Järven” brings together a selection of six ten minute tracks that mix together walled noise with static based sound texturing. Vorg is a one man HNW project from city of Jonkoping in Smaland area of Sweden. It’s been a few years since I’ve heard anything from Vorg, the last time I reviewed something of the project's work was back in mid 2010, when they had a split out with fellow Swedish walled noise project Kaffehitler on HarshFuckedForLife Records. Seemingly they only recorded one other tape in 2010, then disappeared. This new CDR release is really the project first full length release, as both their past release were splits, and on the whole this CDR offers up a rewarding selection of fairly short wall noise craft. Each of the 6 tracks are named after a letter from the word Järven( which means Wolverine in English), and each track here is spot on the ten minute mark. So first up we have “J”, and this starts with this weird rambling foreign voice fed through an reeling ‘n’ reedy effects peddle- this last for less than a minute then we’re into the ‘wall’. The ‘wall’ is a mixture rustling ‘n’ galloping aquatic sounding muffled texture that’s over run by a cruller more caustic/ rapid jumping ‘n’ juddering texture. As the track progress the muffled aquatic texture seems to get more active & agitated, and this rather brought to my mind something trying to escape from an underwater net. It's a nice opening track, which has some movement in it, but never really moves too far from it’s orignal structure. Next we have “ä”, and this ‘wall’ is built around a fairly thin mixture of two tones- we have a circular grinding wheel like grain repletion, and more crackle ‘n’ hiss tone loop. This tracks remains unmoving through-out Track number three is of course “R” , and this is a mixture of more blow-out & lose bass bound juddering that’s weaved with crisper ‘n’ crunchy high end jittering. As the track progresses there’s some great knock ‘n’ shifting subtones that appear, and these really give the feeling of been in the hull of a boat on quite choppy waters. Also latter in the track the lose bass bound elements get more active & battering in it’s feeling, and this really intensifies things even more. This is another one of my favourite moments here, as there’s a nice contrast between the two tones along with a nice edgy energy. Track four is entitled “V”, and this mixers together a more raging ‘n’ burrowing bass tone, with a juddering ‘n’ jittering semi higher end noise tone. These two tones are wrapped tightly together in a brutal embrace, and cut along at a quite rapid pace. Once again there are a few more battering & buffeting sub-tones that appear later on in the track, but these are less disturbing and shifting to the ‘walls’ structure compared with the one on the “V” track Next we have “E”, and this tracks strips things down a bit for a mixture of locked droning aquatic noise texturing, which is played over by a tiny ‘n’ slight skipping static grain texture. And last up we have of course “N”, and this returns to more violent & battering walled noise. The ‘wall’ mixers together a simply & receptive bass buffeted noise texture, that battered & whipped by this mix of hissing 'n’ storm swirling sub-tones. This track brought to mind a ship stuck in a continual whirl pool out at sea, but instead of battering & blacked storm skies around the whirl pool, I can picture bright piercing sunlight everywhere. Again another very effective & well thought-out piece of wall-making. All told “Järven” is a welcome return & worthy return from this project, sure a few tracks here are a little underwhelming, but at least half of the tracks here are great examples of well though-out & put together atmospheric & brutally walled noise. I very much looking forward to hearing more new stuff from Vorg, and hopefully it will be sooner than later. Roger Batty
