Vomir/Gender Sabotage - Untilted c60 split [Unlimted Drift - 2011] | This split C60 brings together two side long, crusty & sleazed slice of HNW. On side one we have a track from the French king of unrelenting & unforgiving wall making Vomir, and on side two we have a track from one of the more recent Richard Ramirez project Gender Sabotage. So first up we have Vomir’s side which offers up a single untitled thirty minute track of rapid, raw and overwhelming walled noise. The tracks ‘wall’ is built around layers of crusty & accelerating noise tones- these tones seem to wash over you like a choppy & painful grey caustic sea, yet for all there harsh battering power there’s something oddly soothing & cocooning in this ‘wall’ make-up. I've found in the past Vomir’s take on HNW to be both emotional & encasing, but I’m not sure if I ever felt soothed by one of his walls in this manner before- so thats a new & pleasing experience. But please don’t be fooled with all this talk of soothing & cocooning- this is just as battering, brutal, unforgiving & crusty as ever, there’s just something deep in the ‘walls’ make-up that oddly chills me out. As normal with Vomir’s work this is unmoving, crusty & unforgiving in it’s structure and intent. So all told this is another envolping ‘wall’ from this French master, and it’s just as effective as anything else he’s put out. Over onto side two and we have a thirty minute track from the Gender Sabotage which is entitled “Nor The Other”. As already mentioned this is one of the more recent of Mr Ramirez many projects, it came about in 2007 & since the has put out near on ten releases taking in splits, CDRs, tapes and downloadable wave files. The project is another solo project- theme wise it's based around the world of transsexual prostitutes, actors and transsexual life in genreal, and sound wise it often boils up a sleazed mixture of HNW & Harsh noise; though the track her is more straight HNW. The track is built around a very taut, pummelling & battering layers of fixed drum like noise tonalities- think a very sped-up recording of voodoo drums fed through a mass of roasting fed back, and you’ll get an idea of what this tracks main sonic thrust is all about. The thing that makes the ‘wall’ more interesting is the sudden & subtle shifts with in the 'walls' layers of almost rhythmic pummelling- through out the track Ramirez adds a layer in, pulls a layer out, or adds a sudden more distorted edge to another layer. But all of these shifts are at a very small level, so the wall never breaks it’s rushing & battering intensity. All told is a reward and captivating track , and theres quite a crusty edge to proceedings which makes this a perfect partner to the Vomir track on the other side of tape.
So to sum-up this split C60 offers up two sides of crusty, sleazed and unstoppable HNW from two of the master of the form. Both projects side compliments each other nicely, yet each track has it’s own battering yet moorish feel. Roger Batty
