Panic - Hunter [Cantankerous Records - 2011]Panic is a Netherlands based one man HNW project who specializes in dense, suffocating and darkly violent walled noise. This C30 tape is the projects third release, before this they put out: a 32 second floppy disc(!) and c40 tape. The tape features a side long track per side of tape, and side A’s track is entitled “I'm The Hunter”. This first sides ‘wall’ is a dense & un-escapable mixture of mid-paced crusty rumbling and juddering noise- it feels like you’re either inside a huge and aged machine that’s churning and rumbling through tons of semi dried treacle, or your inside some slow tumbling rusting tube with a mass of earth & rocks in. The ‘wall’ mangers to feel suffocating & inclosing, as well as pitch black, ominous and very brutal. At times it feels like the textures are slowing or going through almost a tunnel of muffled sheen, but I think these are purely a trick of the ‘wall’ it self, and in reality it remains unmoved. Anyway the track mangers to pull you into an bleak almost hypnotized state, and at times it does almost edge towards Ambient HNW tendencies. Over onto side B, and the track here is entitled “I'm Going Hunting”. This ‘wall’ is ultra muffled and crusty mixture of weathered juddering, aged battering’s, and distant/ buried knocking ‘n’ draging tonalities; that appear ever so often. This track feels a lot more wash-out, and semi fading compared with the first track, and the ambient HNW feel is certainly more prominent here as at times the ‘wall’s textures seem to start to lose there sonic shape & depth. At times you feel the 'wall' may completely start to fade and ebb out, but it never does as Panic keeps the whole thing just ebbing and battering along. So this c30 offers up two side long tracks of thick, oppressive and nasty harsh noise wall making which from time to time has some quite battering & bleak ambient HNW edges to it’s wall craft.
