Vomir/Ekunhaashaastaack - Split C40 [Stockroom Records - 2011]This c40 split brings together two French slices of HNW- On side one we have unforgiving crusty wall-making from the infamous Vomir. And on side two we have a fairly active slice of Harsh Noise/ HNW crossbreeding from relatively new project Ekunhaashaastaack. So first up we have the Vomir side which features a single untitled track from the crusty & lo-fi king French king of HNW. And boy this is one very intense, crusty and unforgiving slice of walled noise- the ‘walls’ built around a mixture of mid-paced juddering muffled and concert ripping noise. The track sounds like a super tank ploughing through wall upon wall of thick breezeblock walls, and Vomir locks down into this unforgiving and unchanging wall with such unflinching brutality you literally feel like your physically been ploughed over by the sound . This track feels a lot more pained & aggressive than most Vomir tracks, which more often than not feel rather neutral yet all engulfing in there feel. All told a very nice & unforgiving slice of Vomir at his most crushing ‘n’ crusty. So onto side two and we have the single untitled Ekunhaashaastaack track which comes in at just shy of 15 minute mark. The track shifts ‘n’ shreds at a fairly rapid rate through juddering, rumbling & grating walls of textured noise; these are seared ever so often by high pitched tone screams and drags. I guess the track feels like a very noisy ride in a suspension-less truck with flat tires down a broken road, and ever so often the wheel rims let out (sometimes) sustained violent screams or piercing bays. Then around the midway point the track fades into this sinister, crusty and ghosted out texturally rumble dwell- this stays around for about a minute & a half then we return to the initially mixture of juddering rumbling meets seared high pitched sustains, but the whole thing seems is so much more speedy & ragging in it’s attack. All told a rewarding enough slice of Hash noise meets HNW texturing.
So this split offers up a great crusty ‘n’ crushing slice of angered HNW on side one from Vomir, and on side two an effective enough slice of Harsh noise meets HNW from Ekunhaashaastaack. Side ones track makes this worth picking this up alone, with side two track been a consistent if not wholly great extra. Roger Batty
