After I discovered Kid606's album "Down With The Scene" I slowly collected more of his albums. He always seems to have an interesting way of combining noise with glitch and clicks & cuts. Now this new album is quite different from his previous work. Kid606 released a couple of bootleg mixes before, but most of them as a 7" single. This is the first time he released a full lenght with these so called 'mash-ups'.

At the moment mash-ups are climbing up from the underground status they once had. Popular Belgian DJ's The Dewaele Brothers (Soulwax) released a legal remix bootleg album full with mash-ups of popular songs (only available in the Benelux), ranging from Dolly Parton mixed with Röyksopp and Emerson, Lake and Palmer mixed with Basement Jaxx. Also several popular music magazines already wrote articles about the phenomenon. Resulting in mash-up websites closing down because of the mainstream exposure. And now it's Kid606's turn. An album packed with illegal remixes from several popular artists like Eminem, The Bangles and A-Ha.

It's not that I totally dislike the album, but I get the feeling that the Kid really didn't put a lot of work into it. Most of the songs sound very cheap. Here and there he added some clicks and cuts, some gabber or drum 'n bass beats from his archive. But that's it, nothing is interesting enough to let you come back to the album. Of course, you can get a lot of laughs out of it, and people will adore you if the disc get's played on a party. Hearing 'Video Killed The Radiostar' in the same song as D12's 'Purple Hills' is funny, but it's nothing more. I actually prefer most of the illegal underground bootleg mixes above this release.

So just get Kid606's previous releases, and leave this one alone. It's funny to hear, but there is nothing else to come back for. Get "Down With The Scene" instead.
